Full Moon Party
accommodation:
where to stay

The short answer: you have three real options, and they are not equally good for everyone. Sleep in Haad Rin and walk home, but pay peak prices, accept minimum stays and hear the party until dawn. Sleep within walking distance of the party and get the same trade with slightly better prices. Or sleep fifteen to twenty minutes away, take a songthaew in, and come home to a quiet bed at four in the morning. Most people who have done it more than once choose the third.

What the night actually is

The Full Moon Party takes place on Haad Rin Nok — Sunrise Beach — at the southern tip of Koh Phangan. It starts in the evening around nine and runs until the sun comes up. There is a small wristband fee at the entrance, which goes towards cleaning the beach afterwards. The busiest months are December to April and July to August, when the crowd is at its largest.

It is not a festival with a programme. It is a beach, a lot of sound systems, and tens of thousands of people. Whether that is the best night of your trip or the reason you want to stay somewhere else entirely is a personality question, and we would rather you answer it before you book than at two in the morning.

The dates, and why you must re-check them

Parties are held monthly, and dates are announced as they are confirmed. The next ones are 24 November, 24 December and 31 December 2026 — the last being the New Year party rather than an astronomical full moon, and the biggest of the year. The 2027 calendar appears as dates are confirmed, so book against the announced date, never against the astronomical one.

Here is the part that catches people out: organisers move the party by a day when it collides with a Buddhist holy day. In 2026 that happened twice — July moved from the 29th to the 31st, and October moved from the 26th to the 27th. Anyone who booked flights around the astronomical full moon rather than the announced date would have missed it by a night. Check the announced date again in the week before you travel, not just when you book.

Option one: stay in Haad Rin

The obvious choice, and the only one where you can walk home. It is also the most expensive and the most uncomfortable: many places enforce minimum stays around party dates, rooms sell out weeks ahead for the bigger months, and "quiet room in Haad Rin on a Full Moon night" is close to a contradiction.

Choose it if the party is the reason for the trip, or if you are in a group that wants to stay out until it ends.

Option two: stay close, but not on it

The sunset side of Haad Rin and the roads immediately behind the village give you a walkable distance with slightly more sanity. It is a reasonable compromise for a couple of nights. It is still Haad Rin, though: the traffic, the noise and the price all belong to the same event.

Option three: stay on the south coast and travel in

This is where Ban Tai comes in, and it is why we are here. From Ban Tai, Haad Rin is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes by songthaew when the road is moving — longer on party night, when everybody on the island is using the same road in the same direction. You go in for the night, and you come back to a villa with a pool and a quiet road.

The trade is simple and honest: you accept a journey home, and in exchange you get sleep, space and a much lower price for the same week. If you are staying more than two nights — the party plus a few days of actual holiday — this is the arrangement that makes the rest of the trip work.

Getting home at four in the morning

What to book, and when

For ordinary Full Moon dates, three to four weeks ahead is usually enough. For peak season (December to March) and especially for New Year, think one to three months. If you are set on Haad Rin itself, add a margin — it fills first, and the good cheap rooms go before the expensive ones.

If, like us, you are booking a whole villa rather than a room, the trip becomes a group decision: six people around a pool, one songthaew in, one back. That is a different and much cheaper way to do the same night.

The honest version

The Full Moon Party is one night. If you are on Koh Phangan for a week, plan the other six days as if the party were not happening: the water in the north and west is better for swimming, the beaches at Thong Nai Pan are calmer, and the island is genuinely beautiful when the crowd has gone. Booking a base that only makes sense for one night is the mistake we see most.

Staying nearby

Yang Yai House & Villa sleeps up to six in three bedrooms, with a private plunge pool in Ban Tai — about fifteen to twenty minutes from Haad Rin, and a quiet road to come back to. Booked directly with us; a person confirms the dates before you pay.
